The Joel Hernandez Voice of the Recovery Community Award reception was held on June 25, 2009 at the law office of Buchanan, Ingersoll & Rooney in Washington DC. It was a tremendous success! About 100 guests attended and there was a wonderful lineup of speakers: Office of National Drug Control Policy Director Gil Kerlikowske spoke to our guests about moving away from the divisive drug war rhetoric and focusing on getting help to those who need it; Allen McQuarrie, co-chair of Pennsylvania Recovery Organization – Achieving Community Together (PRO-ACT) accepted the second annual award on behalf of PRO-ACT and talked about their organization’s many accomplishments over the years, including their influence in the political sphere and in communities across the state of Pennsylvania; our special guest speaker, Chris Matthews, discussed our unique position to affect national change with the new administration to help even more Americans get the help they need to find and sustain their recovery.
