Training: Science of Addiction and Recovery

Florence (Flo) Hilliard

Flo Hilliard holds a Master’s Degree in Health with a specialty in Addictions Counseling from the University of North Florida. In the last 20 years she has worked as a clinician, lecturer, prevention specialist, video producer and grant writer in the fields of addiction prevention, treatment and recovery.

She has worked in all phases of treatment, and worked with high-risk students in the Florida school system under the Drug Free Schools program.

In 1995, Hilliard developed a series of training tapes and manual, “Women and Substance Abuse: Understanding the Problem,” which have been used by Hazelden-New York, The Betty Ford Center and the Washington and Oregon state Departments of Public Health. In 2001 she produced a training and therapeutic video, “Many Voices, One Journey.”

She holds dual appointments at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the School of Social Work as Lecturer and as Senior Outreach Specialist in the Department of Professional Development and Applied Studies. She was the Project Manager for the Wisconsin Women’s Education Network on Addiction and Recovery, funded by the state Bureau of Substance Abuse Services and was a member of the National Campaign Advisory Committee that was the precursor to Faces & Voices of Recovery and is in long-term recovery.
