Employment Opportunity: Field Organizer

Faces & Voices is looking for a field organizer to work on its Recovery Voices Count project. The deadline for applying is February 18, 2008.

FIELD ORGANIZER

Faces & Voices of Recovery, a national organization working to mobilize, organize and rally the millions of Americans in recovery from addiction, their families, friends and allies in a campaign to end discrimination and achieve a just response to addiction as a public health crisis, has an immediate opening for a Field Organizer. This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate.

Position Summary: The Field Organizer will work closely with Faces & Voices’ National Field Director and allied organizations including recovery community organizations around the country, to identify, plan and implement activities in 10 states in spring 2008 and follow-up efforts through September 2008, with the possibility of funding through November 2008.

The Field Organizer will be responsible for working with existing local recovery community organizations, advocates, community leaders and allied organizations to develop and implement a plan to organize public education and media events such as voter registration drives, town hall meetings, voter education activities and voter participation activities in conjunction with Faces & Voices’ nonpartisan civic engagement campaign, Recovery Voices Count. In addition, the Field Organizer will assist in the creation of new recovery community organizations and the support of existing recovery community organizations.

These events will be used to organize community-based responses to the issues raised in the program and develop follow-up plans to address barriers to recovery, through education and advocacy that have been identified in communities.

Description:

  • With National Field Director and other key partners, identify, guide and support organizing campaigns in 10 key states carry out voter registration, voter education and get-out-the-vote activities as part of Recovery Voices Count
  • Collaborate on the development of web-based and other organizing tools
  • Engage national network of recovery advocates beyond 10 key states through web-based and other organizing tools, developing recovery advocacy networks in those communities

Experience/Education:

  • At least 2 years experience in community organizing and/or 2 years of experience working on addiction recovery issues
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • In-depth knowledge of the recovery community and recovery cultures
  • Experience working on advocacy campaigns, media experience and event organizing
  • College degree preferred

Skills/Attributes:

Strong interpersonal skills required. Must be organized and able to juggle multiple priorities effectively. Ability to work well under pressure with critical deadlines. Facility with standard computer applications and telecommunications is essential. Capacity and desire to work with diverse constituencies, a commitment to public interest, and can do attitude is a must. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

This is a full-time position, with funding for six months. Salary: $20,000 with generous leave and health benefits. Faces & Voices of Recovery is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The position can be based anywhere and candidates must have the flexibility and willingness to work long hours (including some evenings and weekends) and travel extensively.
