Our Stories

Dodie Murphy
Berea, KY

Today is my 18th anniversary of sobriety. I came into mutual support at age 38 nasty and sarcastic. I hurt day and night. I had lost the love and respect of my two children.

It took me about two years to get out of denial about my alcoholism—I truly thought my problem was I smoked too many Marlboros!—and the day I did I went to mutual support, stopped drinking, and haven’t had alcohol in any form since. No beer. No liquor. No over-the-counter medicines with alcohol. No mouthwash with alcohol. No flavorings with alcohol.

Because of sobriety in mutual support, I have acquired serenity and peace of mind, both of which were unknown to me when I was drinking. I have become a kind, compassionate person. My attitude of superiority is gone. I am loved by my children and grandchildren.

I still addend meetings regularly, sponsor women, make coffee, freely give out my phone number to newcomers, and advocate in my community for addiction treatment on demand.

Most of all, I have a conscious contact with a Higher Power that keeps me from being obsessed with myself!
